The Ecoclimatic Regions of Canada Map is
one of the important products of the Canada Committee on Ecological Land Classification (CCELC). This map and report is particularly important as an ecological baseline and
tool for the development of climate change scenarios and ecoregion
specific adaptation strategies.
Ecoclimatic regions are typically broad areas on the earth's surface characterized by distinctive ecological responses to climate, as expressed by vegetation and reflected in soils, wildlife, and water. Within ecoclimatic regions, the ecologically effective climate will result in the development of similar trends in biodiversity and vegetation succession on similar soils occurring on similar parent materials and positions on the landscape. The CCELC was a National scientific and technical coordinating committee established in 1976 to encourage the development and promote the application of a uniform ecological approach to land classification for integrated resource planning, management and environmental impact assessment. Membership included federal and provincial agencies, academia and the private sector. This report was published in 1989, based on contributions and observations of several hundred specialists across Canada. More..... |
